You may have noticed our school mascot, Owlek, appearing throughout the school, in our brochures, and across our digital platforms, helping to strengthen the sense of community and belonging that makes Britannica such a special place to learn.
For an international school, a mascot can play an important role in bringing together students, families, and staff from many different cultures. A mascot provides a shared symbol that everyone can connect with, helping to build school identity, pride, and a sense of unity across our diverse community.
But who is this charming little wise owl with a graduation cap, and how did he become the mascot of Britannica?
Owlek was originally created by one of our students, ZiQian, during the 2018-19 academic year. The school held a drawing competition to design a mascot, and this entry stood out as the winning design. The original artwork showcased a delightful and memorable character that quickly captured the spirit of our community.
Since then, Owlek has been professionally redesigned, giving him the polished look you see today. He regularly appears at community events, celebrations, and school videos, helping to create a familiar and welcoming presence for students of all ages. There is even a plush toy version, along with a variety of festive digital adaptations throughout the year. During a recent Art Week for example, Owlek was used to showcase the wide range of our extra-curricular activities on a display of colourful canvases created by our students.
We are very proud that our mascot was designed by one of our own students, making Owlek a unique symbol of Britannica's history and values. As our school continues to grow, Owlek remains a friendly reminder that, although we come from many different backgrounds, we are all part of one community.
We are certain that Owlek will continue to inspire school spirit, connection, and belonging throughout the coming academic year and beyond.
