Is there an entrance exam as part of the application process?

All students applying to Britannica will be assessed prior to admission as part of the enrolment process.

Children applying to Year 1 and Year 2 will have an interview with our Head of Primary and/or the Key Stage Coordinator, allowing us to get to know them a little bit before making a formal placement offer.

Applicants into Year 3 - 6 are required to complete a standardised test called the CAT4, followed by an interview with our Head of Primary and/or the relevant Key Stage Coordinators.

Students applying to our Secondary school (Years 7-13) will also need to complete a CAT4, as well as a Cambridge English language placement test, followed by an interview with the Head of Secondary. Students seeking admission to Years 10 - 13 must have an advanced English proficiency level (C1 is preferred) in order to allow them to access the examination curriculum fully.

Find out more about our Admissions process here.

Does Britannica offer English as an additional language support?

Britannica offers EAL support across Years 1 - 9. In Years 10 - 13, students require a certain level of English proficiency to be able to access the examination curriculum fully. Find out more about our language programmes here.

Does Britannica offer specialised learning support?

Britannica International School has limited services for students with special educational needs. The school is prepared to consider applications from students with special educational or physical needs under the following circumstances:

  • The nature of special needs is clearly established prior to admission;

  • The scope of special needs does not exceed the competencies and provisions available within the school, or through agencies known to the school; with which we can work.

Do my children need a residence permit in order for me to apply?

Yes. In order for you to submit your child's application, we will need proof that you are eligible to reside in Hungary as a family. However, if you are currently in the process of obtaining your permits, you are welcome to upload your permit application, then provide the permits once received at a later date. Please consult with our Admissions team for more information.

Can I still apply for a school place in Budapest if my children are not in the country?

Yes - we can arrange for children to take the CAT4 assessment online and to have an online meeting with a member of staff - although it is always preferable to meet the students face-to-face if possible.

Which year group or grade level should my child go into?

Placing your child in the right class is very important in their development.

Here at Britannica International School, Budapest, we allocate students to a class based on the following criteria:

1. Age according to UK schools’ criteria. Please see the Class Allocation chart for details.

2. Academic background (having already completed a specific year in the British system at a previous school for example).

3. Special circumstances based on special education needs, observations or for specific social/emotional (non-academic) reasons.
